Big Lots Inc. is the nation's leading broadline closeout retailer with annual revenues exceeding $3 billion. Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, Big Lots operates more than 1,300 retail stores serving 46 states. Four regional distribution centers throughout the country, ranging in size from 1 million to 3 million square feet, provide the company's stores with brand name products from more than 3,000 manufacturers.

Challenge
  • Evolve the Big Lots brand name
  • Allow Big Lots customers to view the weekly store specials in cities where they do not reside. For example, a Big Lots customer vacationing in another city, might want to view all the store specials in the Big Lots store in the city he or she is visiting.
  • The site had to appeal to a broad target audience of investors, consumers and potential employees.
Solution
  • Developed a regional ad locator enabling Big Lots customers to find in-store sales by inputting Zip codes.
  • Developed a custom human resources application module allowing job seekers to find positions by selecting one or multiple criteria. Additionally, a browser-based HR administration application gave Big Lots Human Resources the ability to post, retrieve, add and edit positions online.
  • Developed a Store Locator and mapping functionality for 1,200 Big Lots retail stores.
Outcome
  • Won 2000 Web Marketing Standard of Excellence Award.
  • Increased awareness of the Big Lots brand name.
  • Compiled more than 6,000 Promotional Ad Notification sign-ups in first half of fiscal 2000.
  • The site was a huge internal success.
  • Plans to extend Web site with business-to-business services.
